JEWELRY CARE GUIDE
(Sterling Silver Edition — Gems by Hoda)
1 | Understanding Sterling Silver
All Gems by Hoda pieces are crafted from 925 sterling silver—an alloy containing 92.5 % pure silver and 7.5 % copper for strength. Even the finest sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time; the speed depends on environment and body chemistry, not on quality.
2 | Why Tarnish Happens
| Primary Factors | Details |
|---|---|
| Humidity & Air Quality | Moist air and airborne sulfur compounds gradually darken silver. |
| Prolonged Exposure to Air | Storing pieces uncovered accelerates surface oxidation. |
| Chemicals | Hair spray, perfume, deodorant, bleach, and household cleaners trigger rapid discoloration. |
| Body Chemistry | Elevated perspiration or salt levels can hasten tarnish, even with frequent wear. |
3 | How to Minimise Tarnish
-
Wear Your Silver Often
Skin contact helps keep the metal bright by gently polishing it through friction.
Exception: If you know your perspiration is high in salt, limit wear and focus on step 2. -
Store Airtight
When not in use, place jewelry in a zip-lock bag or a closed jewelry box with anti-tarnish strips. -
Keep Chemicals Away
Put jewelry on last, after applying cosmetics or sprays, and remove it before swimming, cleaning, or exercising.
4 | Restoring the Shine
-
Routine Maintenance
Light tarnish can usually be removed with a soft polishing cloth. Every Gems by Hoda order includes one. -
Deep Cleaning
Should your piece need more intensive care:- Local customers may email orders@gems-byhoda.com to arrange professional re-polishing.
- International customers can visit a trusted silversmith, or request our at-home cleaning method by the same email.
